EXTREMELY RARE Antique French procession shield. This piece is circa the late 1600s to the early 1700s and came from a church or monastery in Provence. The shield represents the Assumption of Mary. The assumption of Mary is the belief that Mary's body and soul were taken into heaven by God after her death. It's a holy day celebrated on August 15th. This stunning procession shield was once mounted to something, as seen by the four mounts on the back. It measures 11.5" x 8.75" and has a curve as a shield would have; it is a beautiful and extremely rare piece for any collection.
